Indian Health Care Improvement Act: Basics 101

Perhaps the most significant provision of the health care reform law for Indian Country was the permanent reauthorization of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA). The IHCIA serves as the statutory foundation for the provision of health care to American Indians and Alaska Natives. Since 1999, Indian Country has been working to reauthorize the IHCIA in order to modernize the Indian health system.
